space

ok, so when people ask my why i took a physics degree after secondary school i usually make something up about wanting to know about how things work or because it gives me more career options than a made up human subject like sociology of history. however, the truth is quite different but i often hide it because i failed pretty early on in my dream. the real reason i took physics was because i wanted to be an astronaut and getting an excellent physics degree would put me well on the road to being blasted into space as a space research ninja. however, i ended up with an average physics degree and so i guess i will probably be stuck here on the ground forever.

sometimes i do not understand why people are not more interested in space stuff. can you imagine going to jupiter on a space ship and just being able to look at it close up. if you cannot imagine, go to hubblesite.org and look at pictures of planets taken with the hubble space telescope. it is much better than being interested in guns or fried food or whatever.

here is an interesting science fact about jupiter. if it was only a little bit bigger it would have become a star like the sun (only a bit smaller) long ago and the earth would not exist because a planet cannot have a stable orbit around a binary star system. as it stands, jupiter is so huge that it protects the earth from lumps of rock and stuff coming in from the edge of the solar system. it is an example of the awesome power of science.

paul.
