top trumps

on friday the boss called me into his office and said: "paul, you are doing a great job so we are promoting you to a position where you do not have to spend all day talking to idiot sales people on the telephone". ok, not really - work was as useless as usual.

ok, so last week i made a discovery on the way to the office. i always walk the same way, at the same time, every single day. it is maybe not too interesting until you start to notice that you see the exact same people every day doing the same thing. it is due to the predictability of human nature, i think. when it is early in the morning it is easiest to have a routine and just try to get through the day until you can come home and rot your brain with tv, or draw pictures or eat beans from the can or whatever. anyway, what has become clear is that some people have a much more interesting routine than i do. these people are still all strangers but beneath the chaos there is an underlying pattern that is gradually revealed by several months familiarity.

the ultimate local stranger is the guy who walks his daughter to the bus stop every single day. it sounds pretty normal but he seems to prefer to walk about five metres behind her as though they have nothing to do with each other. i think he is maybe waiting for someone to try to kidnap her so that he can launch a surpise attack. it is a tactic that scores highly for him in terms of mysteriousness but i am pretty scared that he has a concealed weapon or something.

ok, so his main rival in my area is the eighties rock man. seriously, he is at the apex of his field with his long hair, cowboy boots, leather jacket on top of denim jacket and best of all, he is about fifty years old. it is an awesome sight to behold when someone clings on to their lifestyle choice way beyond the call of duty. he could have given up years ago but his commitment to the rock cause should be held up as an inspiration to us all, i think.

it is a shame that the two of them might never meet. eighties rock guy seems to lives in the phone booth i always see him in and bus stop man is only interested in burying anyone who looks at his daughter. there is nothing worse than when you can see such potential in a crime fighting partnership but know that it will never come to fruition.

paul.
